Cinema under the palms Port Shorts is back this Saturday

It’s time to gather your picnic rugs and popcorn, because Port Shorts is back this Saturday, 18 October, for another weekend of short film magic under the palm trees at Rex Smeal Park.
This year’s festival features a total of 18 films across three categories - Open Films, Music Video, and Local Films - showcasing a dynamic mix of stories that explore the full spectrum of human experience and societal issues.
The films this year include everything from dark comedy to heartfelt stories.
Highlights include Stranded, a dark, funny tale of two shipwreck survivors, and BRIDGE - My Little Friends, following a cat on a mission to reunite a grieving girl with her lost dog.
Half Past Midnight explores a chance encounter that forces two strangers to confront past romance.
In a futuristic story, Eddie Ray - That Guy Without a Smartphone looks at life in a world dominated by AI and social media, while 2020 Vision takes a satirical look at a dance school trying to make sense of the chaotic year of 2020.
Other films shine a light on personal and societal challenges.
The Ranch Motel examines homelessness, With Love, Lottie explores love and self-worth through the eyes of a disabled teenager, and Anangu Way tells a cross-cultural story of reconnecting with heritage.
National awards circuit
Adding extra excitement this year, Port Shorts has earned official recognition from the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (AACTA), giving filmmakers a direct pathway to one of Australia’s top film honours.
For the first time, all Open category finalists are eligible for nomination in the AACTA Best Short Film Award.
Alison George, Port Shorts Festival Director, said the AACTA endorsement reflects the festival’s growing role in Australia’s short film landscape.
“It is the icing on the cake for us and we’re excited to collaborate with the AACTA team to support the next generation of amazing filmmakers from around Australia,” Ms George said.
Port Shorts 2025 takes place on Saturday, 18 October at Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas.
