The final cane truck has left Douglas Shire.
In the early hours of this morning, the last truckload of sugar cane completed its journey to Gordonvale, marking the end of an era for the Mossman sugar industry, according to a Douglas Shire Council statement released today.
A DSC spokesperson said the council wanted to pay tribute to generations of cane farmers who have shaped the region’s identity and economy for more than 130 years.
“Sugar cane has been a cornerstone of our local economy and a defining feature of our landscape,” Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.
“We thank the generations of farmers who have worked tirelessly to support their families, our community and the region’s prosperity.”
The Mossman Advisory Committee, which meets today, is searching for ways to diversify agriculture in the Shire.
“(The) Council will continue to play an active role in the transition process,” she said.
“We’re focused on ensuring agriculture remains a meaningful part of our region’s future.”
Canegrowers Mossman chairman Matt Watson said farmers were looking at alternative crops to produce.
“Grower representatives are part of the Mossman Advisory Committee and will continue their efforts to ensure farmers have a way forward and agriculture a place within the Shire,” he said.
