Local students dive into reef adventures at Low Isles

Each year, students from the Douglas Shire get a firsthand experience of the Great Barrier Reef thanks to local reef operator Quicksilver, and this year was no exception.
Year Six students from Port Douglas State School, Wonga Beach State School, and St Augustine's Primary School enjoyed a memorable day at Low Isles.
They learned about the environment, marine life, and island history while also forging lasting friendships with classmates from across the district.
For Port Douglas State School students, the day was packed with fun in the sun.
Snorkelling in crystal-clear waters and discovering the island’s natural wonders and history made for an unforgettable experience as they prepared to graduate from primary school and move on to ‘big’ school next year.
Wonga Beach State School students were thrilled to spot a dolphin and a manta ray during the trip.
A guided island walk with a marine biologist and a glass-bottom boat tour further enriched the experience, giving students a deeper understanding of the reef’s unique ecosystem.
This annual excursion is supported by the Queensland Government’s Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program, providing students with a chance to connect with one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders while fostering a love for marine science and environmental stewardship.
St Augustine’s Primary School also extended their gratitude to Quicksilver for another wonderful opportunity for their Year 6 students.
“The experiences, laughter, smiles and fun have been a brilliant way to begin the end-of-year wind down,” a spokesperson said.
