Clever young calculators take silver in QLD Mathematics Finals
QUIZ CHAMPIONS
It was a proud moment for Far North Queensland as a local team of young mathematicians claimed second place in the state at the 2025 Year 5/6 Mathematics Quiz.
Representing St Andrew’s Catholic College in Cairns, Year 6 students Kaya Liu and Theo Solomon, together with Year 5 student Adela Ye, impressed judges with their problem-solving skills and teamwork.
After finishing second in both the District and Regional rounds, the trio secured their spot among Queensland’s top 15 teams for the State Finals, held on Thursday, November 6.
On the big day, they shone again, taking silver, just behind fellow Far North Queenslanders from Trinity Anglican School.
Another St Andrew’s team: Thomas Cram (Year 6), Arlo Gray (Year 5), and Nate Schwartz (Year 6), also performed strongly, placing fourth in District and third in the Regional Final.

Mr Lachlan Greene, Extension and Enrichment Coordinator at St Andrew’s, said the achievement reflected the success of the school’s Year 5/6 Mathematics Enrichment Program.
“Students meet every second Friday afternoon after school to tackle challenging problem sets and explore real-world applications of mathematics,” he said.
“It’s thanks to the passion and dedication of our Primary teacher, Mr Nathan Zahra, that they’ve been able to reach this level.”
For Far North Queensland, the results are more than just medals, they showcase the region’s students making their mark on the state stage, proving that with curiosity, teamwork, and a love of numbers, the sky really is the limit.
