An iconic face of the Daintree Ferry has retired after 27 years of shuttling people and their vehicles back and forth across the river.
A gathering was held at the Daintree Village Hotel to farewell Warren “Wallaby” Jack, who friends Chris and Charmaine Norris said was known for his friendly spirit and unwavering commitment to his job - the pair owned and operated the ferry for 15 years from 2006 to 2021.
“It was a fantastic night at the Daintree Village Hotel as friends, colleagues and admirers gathered to celebrate the retirement of the legendary Wallaby,” they said.
“He has been much more than a ferry deckhand - he is a beloved figure who made each crossing a memorable experience.”
They said Wal has forged lasting bonds within the community, and this was the end of an era.
“Future river crossings will not be the same without him at the helm,” They said.
“After all, if Wal doesn't know, it's not worth knowing.”
The gathering included the 2021 ferry crew, who reunited to share stories and celebrate close to three decades of Wal working on the ferry.
Chris and Charmaine also wished Wal well in his retirement.
