St Andrew’s Catholic College in Cairns has knocked it out of the park, being recognised on the national stage, receiving the “Celebrating Cricket in Schools” award at the Cricket Australia National Community Cricket Awards.

The annual awards honour the individuals, clubs, and organisations making a positive impact on grassroots cricket across the country. 

St Andrew’s was selected from schools nationwide for its strong community involvement, inclusive programs, and the way it fosters a love for the game among students.

College Principal Ian Margetts said the award reflects the school’s commitment to combining sport and education.

“We are incredibly proud to be acknowledged by Cricket Australia for our cricket program,” Mr Margetts said. 

“This award is a testament to the enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our staff led by Academy Coach Mr Jason Pennisi, and the supportive spirit of our broader school community.”

Over the past two years, the College has introduced a wide range of cricket initiatives. 

These include clinics with Bulls Masters and Queensland Cricket, inter-school competitions, high-performance coaching, physical assessments with exercise physiologists, and inclusive programs to boost participation for all ages and abilities.

The school says it is excited to continue expanding its cricket academy in partnership with both local and national sporting bodies.
