Quirky scarecrows take top prize in local competition

Two standout scarecrows have been crowned winners of this year’s Douglas Shire Scarecrow Competition, each bringing creativity, heart, and a good dose of local charm.
Now in its second year, the competition was launched by Tanya Morris from the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre as a fun way to connect people across the Shire and spark a little joy through community creativity.
One winning entry came from Mossman Kindergarten, where the children created a scarecrow that showcased not only their creativity but also the support of their families.
“The children loved making the scarecrow,” said Miss Karen and Miss Megan.
“They wanted to include themselves too, to show that their families and the wider community were part of it.”
Families contributed materials for the project, including one unexpected addition.
“One child was so proud to donate a pair of their mum’s bras… how could we not include it?”, they laughed.
Also taking out top honours was Mossman Hospital Aged Care Facility.
They entered a wonderfully resourceful creation named Cecil Mosh, a true Far North Queensland-style scarecrow made almost entirely from recycled materials gathered around the hospital.
“Cecil is extra special because our beautiful residents made him themselves,” Anna Bedoes from the facility said.
“He’s a reflection of their creativity, humour, and connection to the region.”
Both winners received a $100 voucher for Mossman Hardware.
