A man was stabbed in the back in his Cooktown home last night.

At about 12.30am the man confronted an intruder in the Helen Street house.

Police said the intruder then grabbed a knife from inside the home and stabbed the 22-year-old resident in the back before running away.

The man was rushed to Cooktown Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in a stable condition.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information, dashcam footage or CCTV vision to come forward.
