A touch of gold brings seniors together in Port Douglas

Recently, the Port Douglas and District Probus Club rolled out the red carpet (or perhaps the gold carpet) for their inaugural joint Probus and U3A Sunset event, themed “A Touch of Gold.” Judging by the laughter and glittering outfits, it was a golden success.
The event brought together 50 community members for an afternoon of socialising, games, and cocktails while enjoying the sunset at the picturesque St Crispins Cafe.
Probus President Susan Stafford said the event was part of a broader initiative to strengthen community connections between the two organisations, both of which provide social and educational opportunities for seniors.
“Probus is a new club in the Douglas Shire as of late 2024,” Susan said. “This event was a way to build positive relationships and foster collaboration with U3A, while also offering a fun and inclusive social opportunity for our members.”
She added, “Events like this play a significant role in reducing social isolation by giving seniors opportunities to connect with others in their community. Having an organised event makes it easier for those who live alone to join in and meet like-minded people.”
Attendees enjoyed the venue, food, games, and conversation, with many embracing the gold-themed dress code and getting involved in the afternoon’s activities.
Both Probus and U3A are now planning to make the joint event a regular fixture to continue fostering social connections and reducing isolation among seniors across the Douglas Shire.
Local businesses played a key role as well, with thanks to The Tin Shed, St Crispins, and the Probus and U3A committees for making the event possible.
